The Only Toothpaste You'll Ever Need

The toothpaste industry has spent billions convincing us we need their chemical-packed tubes to maintain oral health. But what if you could ditch the toxins and make a superior, non-toxic toothpaste at home? It’s not only possible — it’s easy, effective, and insanely cheap.
Therefore, I want to start this value packed blog post with this important question: Do you control every ingredient in your toothpaste? If your answer is no, I just want to let you know that it is very simple to switch to a healthier and non-toxic version with almost no effort.
From a monetary aspect, what we spend on a single tube may be insignificant but how about what you spend on toothpaste over a lifetime?
Let's talk about what I personally use and wish everyone used, which is not only natural and harmless to my health but also much more affordable than commercial toothpastes out there.
This 4-ingredient toothpaste takes minutes to make, lasts for months, and gives you a fresh, clean smile without volunteering and even overpaying to get chemicals into your very own mouth.
This DIY toothpaste uses just 4 simple ingredients that work together like magic: coconut oil, clove oil, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide.
Stick around because by the end, you may never look at store-bought toothpaste the same way again.
The Hidden Dangers in Store-Bought Toothpaste (Why You Should Care)
Here are just a few of the ingredients that are in packaged toothpaste: Triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and artificial dyes... these are just the tip of the iceberg by the way. These ingredients have useless functions that play to human psychology such as making your toothpaste foam or taste minty fresh, but at what cost?
Most people assume that if a product is sold in stores, it must be safe. But that’s rarely the case, as seen in packaged, ultra-processed foods sold freely everywhere. Mainstream toothpaste brands are loaded with controversial ingredients, such as:
Fluoride: Linked to neurotoxicity and bone health issues when consumed in excess.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): A harsh detergent that may cause mouth ulcers or irritation.
Triclosan: An antibacterial agent banned in hand soaps but somehow still allowed in toothpaste.
Artificial Colors and Sweeteners: These are unnecessary additives with potential long-term health risks.
Here’s the scary part: the tissues in our mouth absorb chemicals faster than the skin on your body. This means every brush exposes your system to a chemical cocktail.
But what if you could brush with ingredients so safe you could actually eat them? That’s exactly what the DIY toothpaste that I use, is. It’s 100% non-toxic, safe for kids, and backed by science.
The 4 Superhero Ingredients That Clean, Whiten, and Protect My Teeth
1. Coconut Oil – The Antibacterial Wonder
Coconut oil is known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps eliminate harmful bacteria like Streptococcus mutans — the main culprit behind cavities. Coconut oil also soothes gum inflammation and acts as a natural moisturizer, leaving my mouth feeling fresh and hydrated.
2. Baking Soda – The Natural Whitener
Like everyone else, I too want whiter teeth without harsh bleaching agents. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that scrubs away stains while balancing the pH of the mouth. While commercial whitening products are harsh on enamel, baking soda gently lifts stains and keeps enamel strong.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide – The Deep Cleaner
We see hydrogen peroxide in whitening kits for a reason — it works! This gentle antiseptic fights bacteria, removes surface stains, and keeps my breath fresh. In my DIY toothpaste, it works as a safe, natural bleaching agent, giving me a brighter smile without the chemical overload.
4. Clove Oil – The Germ-Killing Flavor Boost
Both clove and oregano oils are nature's strongest antibacterial and antifungal agents. Clove oil has been used in dentistry for centuries as a natural pain reliever due to its compound eugenol. Oregano oil, on the other hand, packs one of the most potent antibacterial punches of any essential oil. Both add flavor to this toothpaste recipe which I personally mix and match. Both oils kill germs without causing any harm to me.
How to Make This Non-Toxic Toothpaste In Under 2 Minutes
No fancy tools, no complicated steps, just mix, store, and brush.
Here’s the simple, step-by-step recipe to make your own all-natural toothpaste:
Ingredients
1 part coconut oil (e.g., 1 tablespoon)
½ part baking soda (e.g., ½ tablespoon)
¼ part hydrogen peroxide (e.g., ¼ tablespoon)
Clove or oregano oil to taste (2-3 drops for a batch this sample size, I prep a small jar each time to last for about 3 months)
Now, in a small bowl, combine the coconut oil, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. Mix thoroughly until you achieve a smooth, paste-like consistency. Add a few drops of clove or oregano oil (as much as you like). Store your toothpaste in a small, air-tight glass jar or container and that's it.
No heating, no chemicals, and no preservatives. You’ve just created a non-toxic, whitening, antibacterial toothpaste for a fraction of the price of commercial brands.
How to Use It and What to Expect After 7 Days
To use, simply scoop a small amount with a spoon or clean tooth brush, or dip your brush in it, and brush your teeth as usual. You’ll notice a mild, fresh taste (thanks to the clove and coconut oils) and a smooth, gentle feel on your teeth. Expect:
Whiter teeth: Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide work together to lift stains naturally.
Fresher breath: No synthetic "minty freshness" here — just real antibacterial power.
Healthier gums: Reduced swelling and improved gum health thanks to coconut oil and clove oil.
No chemical aftertaste: Just pure, fresh, natural flavor.
Customizing Your Homemade Toothpaste
Everyone’s oral health needs are different, and one of the best things about DIY toothpaste is how easy it is to customize.
For Sensitive Teeth: Use less baking soda or add a pinch of xylitol for a milder paste.
For Extra Whitening: Add a touch more hydrogen peroxide or a pinch of activated charcoal.
For Kids: Skip the clove or oregano oil and replace it with a few drops of sweet orange or peppermint essential oil for a kid-friendly flavor.
Switching to natural toothpaste can be a huge favor you do to your mouth. And, since everything enters our body through our mouth or nose, I personally watch what I put in it. I quite like the mild freshness that lasts, rather than the overpowering commercial mint that evaporates instantly.
I feel good knowing I'm no longer absorbing mystery chemicals through my gums and I wish everyone else knew too. That's why I put my time in producing high value content here at The Wellnessian.
Enjoy your time on Earth and see you on the next post!
